The Aldar Headquarters is one of the most iconic landmarks in Abu Dhabi, known for its revolutionary circular design and architectural brilliance. Situated in Al Raha Beach, this structure has not only redefined the city’s skyline but also symbolized innovation in Middle Eastern architecture. While it functions as a commercial center and is not fully open to the public, it remains a must-see attraction for architecture lovers and tourists alike.

The Aldar Headquarters is globally recognized as the first circular skyscraper in the Middle East, a true architectural marvel that defies traditional design. Its geometric precision, mirror-glass façade, and waterfront location make it a standout symbol of modern UAE.

  • Designed by: MZ Architects
  • Concept Year: 2005
  • Completed: 2010
  • Number of Floors: 23
  • Height: 110 meters
  • Shape Symbolism: Unity, Infinity, Rationality

The vision for the Aldar HQ was to create a simple yet powerful architectural form that would become a timeless icon. Architect Marwan Zgheib was inspired by the circle, representing unity and eternity. The idea was to break away from conventional box-like skyscrapers and instead develop a spherical structure that stands firm on two ground contact points.

The circular design is rare in architecture and was chosen to represent continuity, perfection, and balance. It appears like a glowing disc set between the city and sea, especially stunning at sunrise and sunset.

Instead of conventional columns, the building uses a diagonal steel grid (diagrid) for support. This:

  • Reduces internal structural obstructions
  • Allows more open interior layouts
  • Adds to the building’s sleek and futuristic look

The curved glass façades are connected seamlessly to the roof via a continuous horizontal glass band, giving the impression of one unified surface.

Triangular diamond-shaped glass panels were used to mimic a curved form using flat glass. The reflective façade mirrors the sea, sky, and even the viewer, enhancing its visual impact.

Address: Al Raha Beach, Abu Dhabi, UAE
The building is located near the Dubai-Abu Dhabi highway, making it visible to commuters traveling between the two emirates. It is also close to Abu Dhabi International Airport and the Al Raha residential district.
